LA - Spelling test, finish online book
A word about our online books...
First and foremost…thank you parents! Without your help editing and typing and overseeing this project, we would be in no shape to close our order next week! So, I thank you! This was a new process for me, but one that has truly inspired your fourth grader to write. I’m amazed at their enthusiasm.
A few things to keep in mind as we finish our projects…
No last names – Please remember that a paperback copy of your child’s story will be donated to other children. Please refrain from printing their last name. You may include their first name and age or school grade level if you wish.
Photos of children – This is up to you! I have reminded the students that this will be given to others, so if they want their photo out there, that’s fine. Use your discretion. You are the one who is ‘proofing’ the final book copy and hitting the ‘project complete’ button – so I urge you to look everything over carefully.
‘About the author’ page – There is an option to simply delete this page from your student’s book. If you’d like to keep it as a part of their book, again…I urge you to use your own discretion.
Final Proofing – I unfortunately do not have the time to go online and reread all 55 of our books before we publish, so please look it over with your child one more time and make sure it is in perfect shape for publishing. I will be submitting all of the book order forms on Tuesday and letting the company know we are set to publish ALL books at that time. Your child’s book will be printed at that time, completed or not.
I have met with all students individually to see what needs they have as they prepare to finish, and all of them are confident and have assured me that their books will be finished over the weekend. We will use our time in computer class Monday to make final edits, check spelling, check our pictures, etc. and I will be hitting the ‘print ALL books’ button on Tuesday.
Please do not hesitate to email me your questions or concerns. I’ll do my best to help you through this process! When the final copies of our new books arrive, we’ll celebrate!
Thanks again for all of your support of our project. This has been a rewarding experience for all of us.

Grade 4 News - February 18th
Online Book Project Update:
We are in the home stretch! All students must be finished typing their books online by next Friday, 2/25. Since students are losing computer class with President's Day next week, and Valentine Parties this past week, any time you can dedicate at home to helping get this typed is appreciated. I'll also take any volunteers who would like to come in and help with typing during the following times next week:
Tuesday 2/22 9:43 - 10:22 4A in Computer Lab
Tuesday 2/11 10:24 - 11:03 4B in Computer Lab
If you forgot to send your order form in today, students received a reprint. Please submit ASAP and we'll add you to the group order.
In other news, we received an email today that our class books, 'Christmas Is...' have been shipped! We expect those to arrive within the week!
Thanks for all of your assistance with this project. It's a new process for me, and quite an undertaking. The students are excited about their writing and excited to be helping JOIN. I know in the end it will all be worthwhile. I appreciate your support!
Division Test - will be Wednesday 2/23. We will review in class on Tuesday. Students received a review guide yesterday and should complete over the weekend and bring to class on Tuesday with any questions they have. Following division we will be looking at elapsed time, graphs, and geometry.
Invention Convention News- Students received info this week and must sign a commitment form by next Friday 2/25 to participate. The St. Brendan Invention Convention will be held March 23. Any parent who would like to judge should let me know at lwsmith@cdeducation.org. Thanks!
Interims will be mailed next Friday for students receiving an N in any standard areas. We have been busy in LA with our book project and Frindle work, so there are not many grades at this time. Keep an eye on your child's Friday Folder, and if you see N's or patterns of N's, then please note these are the areas your child needs extra help in. As always, feel free to email me if you have a specific concern. Thanks!
James & the Giant Peach
Hilliard Bradley is presenting this fun play - and we hope to read this great novel in class this Spring. Performances are Friday 2/25 at 7pm and Saturday 2/26 at noon with a carnival following the Saturday performance. Tickets are $5. www.bradleytheater.org

News from Grade 4 - February 10th
Student Conferences- tonight and tomorrow! See you there!
Parents, please plan to spend 30 minutes with your child looking through their portfolios, reviewing their behavior checklist, study skills checklist, written reflections, and help your child set some goals for the remainder of the year. The teachers will be there to meet and greet and see what questions you may have. At the close of your conference, you will be asked to turn in your Parent Questionnaire and your Student Goals Worksheet. There will also be a sign-in sheet so we can keep track of who has arrived.
We hope you'll find this student conference experience valuable and rewarding. We've worked very hard to prepare the portfolios for your viewing.
Valentine Parties - Monday at 2:00 p.m.
Students will need to bring a box or bag to collect their Valentines on Monday. Students should also bring one valentine for each student in their Homeroom class. Miss Lang has agreed that students may dress in red or pink for the day!
Manna thanks!
Thanks to your generosity we were able to prepare lunches for 4o hungry people on Tuesday. Thank you!
Looking ahead to next week:
Family Fun Night - Tuesday February 15th. Come and see what it's all about!
Friday February 18th - Bake Sale - bring your quarters!
Studentpublishing.com
Have you been there? Have you seen your child's log-in paperwork? We are continuing to put the finishing details on our writing so we can work on creating our online books. Paperwork will be sent home next week with ordering details if you'd like to purchase a copy. Prices range from $6.95 - $15.95 depending on the cover you choose. Once again, I need signed paperwork from every child before we can place an order.
News from the Music Room:
Bring your recorder to class on Wednesday if you did not place an order. We will be using them every Wednesday and Friday. Keep them in your bookbag so you will have it with you at school. Those who ordered will receive theirs in class on Weds. Thanks!

Grade 4 News - February 4th
Student Conferences are next week! What can you expect?
On February 10th or 11th you will be guests at your child's portfolio conference. When you arrive, you will come to the cafeteria. Your child will find a place for your conference and invite you to be seated. Then he or she will gather the portfolios for each core course: Religion, Math, Language Arts, Social Studies, Science/Health.
During the time of your conference, your child will share these portfolios with you, along with a self-assessment of study skills and a self-assessment of behavior. Your child will discuss strengths in each curricular area as well as the areas that need improvement. You can review projects and assessments in the portfolio. Feel free to ask questions, but let your child lead the process as much as possible. Your child will also share with you the goals he or she has set for the remainder of the school year.
Teachers will be circulating among the tables in the cafeteria, so if you have a question for a particular teacher, you will have the opportunity to speak with that teacher. You may stay as long as you wish to cover the material in the portfolios.
Finally, you will be asked to complete a Parent Response to the conference - a few questions that require only brief answers. You may also indicate on this sheet if you think a follow-up conference with a particular teacher is needed.
We look forward to seeing you there! - Mrs. Smith, Mr. Rendon, & Mrs. Lewis
