Grade 4 News - December 17, 2010
Persuasive Writing Letter - All students have been working hard on their persuasive writing piece. Perhaps because the subject matter involves writing a family member to ask for that present they've been wanting for Christmas! You should see a copy of their final draft somewhere in their binders or Friday Folders today. We're keeping the originals here for their writing portfolios. Look for these!
Diary assignments were shared today and I can't wait to read them over the break. Students really used their creativity for this!
Math News- We are working on two-digit x two-digit mulitiplication. Please practice more of these over the weekend and over the break! It's a process I don't want them to forget! Also, don't forget to brush up on those math facts over break. We are moving into larger problems and it's going to be essential that students stay on top of these.
There are two Math assessments in today's Friday folder that need returned for portfolios. Thanks for seeing that these are returned promptly!
Looking ahead to next week:
Christmas parties - Monday at 2:00 p.m.
Prayer Service - Tuesday at 9:30. We are also working on classroom auction projects Tuesday. The auction committee would like to remind you to send in a recipe for this. Thanks!
Interims were mailed for some students today, and Terra Nova test results should be arriving in your mailbox soon.
Take some time to savor the season! Take a deep breath from all your baking, shopping, and cards, and try to find time to celebrate the reason for the season.
Happy Advent- Next newsletter will be in 2011!,

Shoebox Science- This program started this week. Let me know if you'd like your child's name off the rotation. All students should return the boxes by Thursday morning so they can be restocked for the next student. Thanks.
Overwhelmed by tests and quizzes?? Us too! Our apologies if your child had a rough week. It was not our intent to overwhelm them with so many studies in one week. We are working together to see what we can do to 'lighten the load' and see that your child's tests are not all lumped together in the future. Thanks for your patience as we iron out the kinks!
A word about Spelling Funky... Spelling Funky will be your child's homework each Wednesday. It gives them a break from the routine of the workbook, and is merely a fun way for students to practice their words. However, I don't expect this assignment to take students longer than a usual Spelling assignment. It is a fun assignment and some students tend to go overboard with creativity! Talk with them and see what kind of time frame they have with their homework, and help them find an activity that they can finish in a timely manner. This is certainly not meant to be a big production. It's simply a way to show that they practiced their 25 words! Thank you!
Looking ahead to next week:

4th Grade News - Friday September 3, 2010
We are busy at work! Students will begin working with Spelling words next week to go along with our Treasures series. Look for your student to bring their words home on Tuesday. Our first Spelling test will be Friday.
This week we took a Reading Placement test. This helps me judge what your child learned last year and where we need to start our learning this year. I also use these results to see if your child could benefit from outside Reading help. We will begin working in our Treasures reading series next week and will be focusing on main ideas, inferences, and problem/solutions.
Current Events begin next week. I know students are anxious to find news articles and work on their presentations. Hopefully your child has shared the rubric, expectations and due date with you. If not, please ask them!
In Math we are continuing our study of Place Value. We made place value bookmarks this week, practiced reading larger numbers, and next week we will look at rounding.
Curriculum Night
I look forward to meeting you all in person on Thursday night. I have an information packet that will be sent home with you, or with your child on Friday if you are unable to attend.
Friday Folders
Today your child has a white weekly folder with a portion of their work from this year. Each Friday these will come home. Please look through this with your child weekly. Make it a point to save any work that can be used as a study guide for a test, and go over any work where your child may have missed a concept. Return the empty envelope to school with your child each Monday. Occasionally there will be a stamp on work that needs returned to school with the folder. These will be marked " PORTFOLIO PAPER - PLEASE RETURN." Thanks for your help with this.
Have a lovely Labor Day weekend!

4th Grade News - Friday August 27th
Stay healthy- we've had strep throat reported in 4th grade. Be on the lookout for symptoms and keep your child home if they are ill.
Seeking Room Moms
Would you be interested in being a room mom this year? Our 'queen' room mom, Tricia Bingham is looking for 2 volunteers from each homeroom. If interested, you may contact her at 389-2661 or seabound1959@aol.com.
Thank You!
Many thanks to those who have so generously donated to our classroom by purchasing a wish list item. If you're feeling left out and still wish to contribute, consult the boxes next to our classroom doors. We are very appreciative of your help!
Math News
We are working on place value as we kick off our studies this year. If you'd like to help, encourage your child to practice reading larger numbers. See if they can read to you correctly numbers like 1,345,014 or 876,405,204. Next week we will be making place value bookmarks to help with this.
Language Arts News
We are working on a variety of reading, writing, and spelling skills. This week we took a spelling test over sight words to see your child's ability level. Next week we will take a Treasures Placement Reading test, and we are working on a variety of writing and grammar skills. For a writing activity next week, your child will need a photo of themselves by Wednesday September 1st. Thanks in advance for your help with this!
Have a great week! Check back daily for the homework assignments!

HOMEWORK - Week of 8/25
HOMEWORK for the week - Cover text books (if you have something- it just helps protect them. No need to make a special purchase), and find a chapter book to keep at your desk for SSR. Sometime next week students will need to bring a photo to school of themselves doing something (not a portrait photo). They will need these for Language Arts by Wednesday September 1st. Thanks!
Math HW Thursday August 26th - 'Ways we use Math' worksheet
Reminders: If your child has not yet purchased these school supplies, they will need to bring these in by Monday: 2 composition books and 2 pocket folders with three-prong inserts. We will be using these in Language Arts starting next week. Thanks!
