Thank you!
Dear Parents,
I know it's been a hectic ride these last few months- but we're on the home stretch! Miss Jill Auer will be here full time starting Monday March 21st. We are working on getting her an email account and she intends to email you weekly with news/updates. In the meantime, you can contact her via Mr. Rendon at jrendon@cdeducation.org, and he'll forward the messages to her. I'm sure she'll be in touch soon to introduce herself to you. Mr. Rendon has also volunteered to add her requests and info to his web page, so check there for more information. I'll be sure to post baby Smith's arrival on this web page next Friday.
Thanks for an incredible year! I will be checking in frequently to see how my 4th graders are doing! I already miss them!
Please don't hesitate to contact me for anything.
Many, many thanks,
Laurie Smith

Reconciliation - tomorrow 10:00 a.m. Mr. Rendon will be on hand to assist you.
Re-Registration - Don't forget to complete your forms and get them to the office by Monday to avoid a higher fee!
Thank You!
A big thanks to 4A students who surprised me with a baby shower and gifts this week! Wow, I feel loved! Thank you ALL!
My time remaining in the classroom is winding down and after next week, will be quite limited. Miss Jill Auer will be taking over duties and will be filling in for me during my remaining doctor appointments. I will be completing the progress reports for third quarter, and Miss Auer will then take over for the remainder of the year. I will still be checking my email periodically, so if you have questions I can assist you with, I am happy to help. It has been my pleasure to be with your fourth grader this year, and I have really enjoyed every minute. I'll still be visiting from time to time and plan to keep in touch. Thank you for sharing your child(ren) with me each and every day!
Baby will be here within just two weeks! WOW!
Judges still needed!
If you have the time, we'd love to have you for our Invention Convention on March 23rd. No experience necessary! Email me today if you'd like to help!
Math News: We are starting our unit in Geometry (Thanks for the donations of pretzels and marshmallows- they were a hit today!), and tests from Chapter 4 should be in your child's Friday Folder today.
LA News: We are working with our Treasures book once again and concluding our work with Literature Circles. Current Events for 4th quarter have been assigned. Check your child's agenda for their due date.

LA - Spelling test, finish online book
A word about our online books...
First and foremost…thank you parents! Without your help editing and typing and overseeing this project, we would be in no shape to close our order next week! So, I thank you! This was a new process for me, but one that has truly inspired your fourth grader to write. I’m amazed at their enthusiasm.
A few things to keep in mind as we finish our projects…
No last names – Please remember that a paperback copy of your child’s story will be donated to other children. Please refrain from printing their last name. You may include their first name and age or school grade level if you wish.
Photos of children – This is up to you! I have reminded the students that this will be given to others, so if they want their photo out there, that’s fine. Use your discretion. You are the one who is ‘proofing’ the final book copy and hitting the ‘project complete’ button – so I urge you to look everything over carefully.
‘About the author’ page – There is an option to simply delete this page from your student’s book. If you’d like to keep it as a part of their book, again…I urge you to use your own discretion.
Final Proofing – I unfortunately do not have the time to go online and reread all 55 of our books before we publish, so please look it over with your child one more time and make sure it is in perfect shape for publishing. I will be submitting all of the book order forms on Tuesday and letting the company know we are set to publish ALL books at that time. Your child’s book will be printed at that time, completed or not.
I have met with all students individually to see what needs they have as they prepare to finish, and all of them are confident and have assured me that their books will be finished over the weekend. We will use our time in computer class Monday to make final edits, check spelling, check our pictures, etc. and I will be hitting the ‘print ALL books’ button on Tuesday.
Please do not hesitate to email me your questions or concerns. I’ll do my best to help you through this process! When the final copies of our new books arrive, we’ll celebrate!
Thanks again for all of your support of our project. This has been a rewarding experience for all of us.

Grade 4 News - February 18th
Online Book Project Update:
We are in the home stretch! All students must be finished typing their books online by next Friday, 2/25. Since students are losing computer class with President's Day next week, and Valentine Parties this past week, any time you can dedicate at home to helping get this typed is appreciated. I'll also take any volunteers who would like to come in and help with typing during the following times next week:
Tuesday 2/22 9:43 - 10:22 4A in Computer Lab
Tuesday 2/11 10:24 - 11:03 4B in Computer Lab
If you forgot to send your order form in today, students received a reprint. Please submit ASAP and we'll add you to the group order.
In other news, we received an email today that our class books, 'Christmas Is...' have been shipped! We expect those to arrive within the week!
Thanks for all of your assistance with this project. It's a new process for me, and quite an undertaking. The students are excited about their writing and excited to be helping JOIN. I know in the end it will all be worthwhile. I appreciate your support!
Division Test - will be Wednesday 2/23. We will review in class on Tuesday. Students received a review guide yesterday and should complete over the weekend and bring to class on Tuesday with any questions they have. Following division we will be looking at elapsed time, graphs, and geometry.
Invention Convention News- Students received info this week and must sign a commitment form by next Friday 2/25 to participate. The St. Brendan Invention Convention will be held March 23. Any parent who would like to judge should let me know at lwsmith@cdeducation.org. Thanks!
Interims will be mailed next Friday for students receiving an N in any standard areas. We have been busy in LA with our book project and Frindle work, so there are not many grades at this time. Keep an eye on your child's Friday Folder, and if you see N's or patterns of N's, then please note these are the areas your child needs extra help in. As always, feel free to email me if you have a specific concern. Thanks!
James & the Giant Peach
Hilliard Bradley is presenting this fun play - and we hope to read this great novel in class this Spring. Performances are Friday 2/25 at 7pm and Saturday 2/26 at noon with a carnival following the Saturday performance. Tickets are $5. www.bradleytheater.org

News from Grade 4 - February 10th
Student Conferences- tonight and tomorrow! See you there!
Parents, please plan to spend 30 minutes with your child looking through their portfolios, reviewing their behavior checklist, study skills checklist, written reflections, and help your child set some goals for the remainder of the year. The teachers will be there to meet and greet and see what questions you may have. At the close of your conference, you will be asked to turn in your Parent Questionnaire and your Student Goals Worksheet. There will also be a sign-in sheet so we can keep track of who has arrived.
We hope you'll find this student conference experience valuable and rewarding. We've worked very hard to prepare the portfolios for your viewing.
Valentine Parties - Monday at 2:00 p.m.
Students will need to bring a box or bag to collect their Valentines on Monday. Students should also bring one valentine for each student in their Homeroom class. Miss Lang has agreed that students may dress in red or pink for the day!
Manna thanks!
Thanks to your generosity we were able to prepare lunches for 4o hungry people on Tuesday. Thank you!
Looking ahead to next week:

Paperwork will be sent home next week with ordering details if you'd like to purchase a copy. Prices range from $6.95 - $15.95 depending on the cover you choose. Once again, I need signed paperwork from every child before we can place an order.
News from the Music Room:

On February 10th or 11th you will be guests at your child's portfolio conference. When you arrive, you will come to the cafeteria. Your child will find a place for your conference and invite you to be seated. Then he or she will gather the portfolios for each core course: Religion, Math, Language Arts, Social Studies, Science/Health.
During the time of your conference, your child will share these portfolios with you, along with a self-assessment of study skills and a self-assessment of behavior. Your child will discuss strengths in each curricular area as well as the areas that need improvement. You can review projects and assessments in the portfolio. Feel free to ask questions, but let your child lead the process as much as possible. Your child will also share with you the goals he or she has set for the remainder of the school year.
Teachers will be circulating among the tables in the cafeteria, so if you have a question for a particular teacher, you will have the opportunity to speak with that teacher. You may stay as long as you wish to cover the material in the portfolios.
Finally, you will be asked to complete a Parent Response to the conference - a few questions that require only brief answers. You may also indicate on this sheet if you think a follow-up conference with a particular teacher is needed.
We look forward to seeing you there! - Mrs. Smith, Mr. Rendon, & Mrs. Lewis

Catholic Schools Week!
We look forward to celebrating the week with you! You are welcome to join your child for lunch next week, and always welcome to join us for Mass. We hope to see you here! Don't forget to support Family Fun Night on Wednesday from 6:00 - 8:00 p.m.
Language Arts News:
"Christmas Is" book orders-
Many thanks to all of you for returning the book order forms marked with either a yes or no. The kit has been shipped and we expect the books to arrive in about one month. We are very excited!
Individual student books-
We are working on drafting our first draft of our individual stories, and we will be editing and getting these ready for typing them online soon. How can you help at home? Ask to see your child's story and go over it with them! Feel free to help edit and revise- there's only one of me and many of them, so it would be a great help if you want to jump in and assist your child with the writing. We want to produce the best stories we can since these are going to be published also. You will even be able to assist them with the story once it is typed online. Stay tuned for more details!
Christopher and Jeanette Canyon to visit!
We are excited to meet these talented illustrators! We looked at samples of their books today in class and students are working on writing a poem and illustrating it in the style of these inspiring artists.
Literature Circles
Our work with Frindle continues. We are halfway through this fun read, and will be completing a final project that utilizes all of our work thus far.
Math News:
Long division continues...and keeps getting longer! Today we worked on dividing into three digits. Keep practicing some at home. The more we practice, the easier the routine becomes.
Have a lovely weekend!
